THE FACT
On August 21, 2023, a new version of smart tachographs will be introduced. From that moment, the changes introduced by Reg. EU 1228/2021 to Annex 1C of Reg. 165/2014, which change the technical construction and operational requirements of smart tachographs.
Among the main new features of this new version is the automatic recording of border crossings and the introduction of a specific function to be activated during loading/unloading operations.
WHICH VEHICLES WILL BE INVOLVED?
Starting from August 21, 2023, all newly registered vehicles must install the new version of smart tachographs.
There is no obligation to replace already registered vehicles, except for those engaged in international transport.
In particular, for those who do international transport:
- from 01/01/2025, they can only be carried out with first or second generation smart tachographs;
- from 08/19/2025, they can only be carried out exclusively with second generation smart tachographs.

In conclusion, the date of August 21, 2023, will mark a turning point and the beginning of a period of updates, with all the necessary consequences. We await developments and the inevitable update of data discharge means, which will soon need to interface with this new type of tachograph.
