Introduction

After having already addressed in previous articles the topic of the mandatory transition to second generation smart tachographs, let's talk again about this technology in view of the upcoming regulatory deadlines. The second generation smart tachograph (Gen. 2 V2) represents a necessary evolution, born to meet increasingly stringent requirements regarding the compliance of transport fleets with the new European provisions. Below are the details on the different generations of tachographs, and especially the key deadlines for mandatory compliance.

The different generations of digital tachographs

Digital tachographs in use since 2006 can be divided into three generations:

  • Gen.1 – Digital tachographs: models produced from 2006 to 2018, such as VDO tachographs (models 1.0-3.0a) and Stoneridge (models 5.0-7.6).
  • Gen.2 – First generation smart tachographs: mandatory since June 2019, these models, such as VDO 4.0 tachographs, include advanced features like the GNSS antenna and DSRC.
  • Gen. 2 V2 – Second generation smart tachographs: in production since 2023, these models (for example, VDO 4.1) introduce features such as automatic country change and loading/unloading function.

The upcoming deadlines

Below are the main deadlines to keep in mind:

  • 1° gennaio 2025: all vehicles used for international transport with first generation models will now be required to be equipped with Gen. 2 V2 tachographs.
  • August 19, 2025: the obligation to install a Gen. 2 V2 tachograph will also be extended to all vehicles equipped with first generation smart digital tachographs.

Regulatory and operational aspects

Gen. 2 V2 tachographs meet regulatory requirements for more accurate monitoring of drivers' driving and rest times, helping companies to monitor fleets more easily with features such as automatic country change and loading/unloading function. The new tachograph also provides an essential contribution to counteracting cabotage activities, which require strict management to ensure compliance with the rules in each country.

Conclusion

For transport companies, meeting the deadlines for the installation of Gen. 2 V2 tachographs is not only a legal obligation but also a necessary step. As the deadlines approach, it is essential for fleets to adopt the new devices, ensuring compliance with European regulations and improving the management of their daily operations.

Tachograph exemption: requirements to know
In the landscape of road transport regulation, the exemption from the tachograph represents an important opportunity for certain categories of vehicles and drivers. Knowing the requirements is essential to operate in compliance with the regulations.
