The Ministry of the Interior has clarified that vehicles registered with intelligent tachographs “Gen. 1” from August 21 to December 31, 2023, will now be able to circulate until August 18, 2025.
THE PROBLEM
As previously analyzed, on August 21, 2023, the obligation to install the new version of the intelligent tachograph “Gen. 2” on all newly registered vehicles came into effect.
However, due to production delays, it was impossible to meet that date, and thus various temporary extensions were granted over the months allowing the installation of intelligent tachographs “Gen. 1” instead of “Gen. 2”.
The last extension of this tolerance regime was set for 12/31/2023.
After that last date, the issue of further extending the extension period or regulating the vehicles that had benefited from it would arise again.
THE ITALIAN CIRCULAR
The Ministry of the Interior, with a Circular dated December 27, 2023, decided to resolve the issue definitively by establishing that, at least regarding Italian territory, vehicles that have benefited from the extension will now be able to circulate until August 18, 2025.
It can indeed be read:
“vehicles registered from August 21, 2023, that have installed the intelligent tachograph version 1 can circulate until August 18, 2025.“
In conclusion, therefore, all vehicles that have installed a smart tachograph “Gen. 1” instead of a smart tachograph “Gen. 2” between August 21 and December 31, 2023, will now be able to operate legally until August 18, 2025.
This is an opportunity to remind that, for vehicles operating in a member state different from that of registration, the date by which the tachograph must be replaced with a smart “Gen. 2” remains today December 31, 2024.
On this last point, we are awaiting any clarification circulars that may be adopted during 2024.
